In Indianapolis food trucks, having a solid identity and offering something truly unique is what makes you stand out amongst the others. One mobile restaurant really stands out for us here @Mealightenment, and that is Seoul Grill Indy. The first thing that caught my eye about this truck was the wicked paint job on their truck; and to be honest, as did "Korean." I had to stop and try it out.
After finding a parking spot nearly a half-block away, I walked down to talk to Brian from Seoul Grill, and to try some of his "korean-fusion" food my stomach was craving.
In similar fashion to the food truck explosion that took place earlier this year for the Super Bowl, Brian and his wife Crystal created their truck from Brian's love of everything business, and cuisine based on Crystal's family business Mama's House, a Korean joint on Indianapolis' East Side. Brian had experience in the food industry while coming up through the ranks in college, and had worked the front and back of the house at restaurants, but said he never truly saw this as the path for career. When he and his wife met, it didn't take long for them to dream up the idea of starting a business such as this.
The menu was totally foreign to me, and probably is to many that have never tried Korean food. I had to take a look at the menu to decide what I wanted. Brian said that when his wife was creating the menu, he "pushed her to make it more fusion," though the only thing that's Hispanic on the menu is the tortillas they serve up many of their dishes in. I actually took about 5 minutes to decide exactly what I wanted to try, and decided on the Korean Tacos, one Bulgogi (beef) and one Daejigogi (pork), and a twist potato. After a lengthy discussion about how I was intimidated by kimchi, Brian was nice enough to throw in a side for me to try, too.
The food was amazing, and there were several different flavors present in the tacos (cilantro, soy vinagrette, etc), but my favorite part about the dish was their use of red pepper paste, or "Seoul Sauce." It gives the dish a little bit of spice, but not enough to overpower the dish. The twist potato is also a nice touch, taking an entire spiral-cut potato and deep frying it on a 12" bamboo skewer. The kimchi, wasn't bad either (thanks again for letting me try it).
This truck is definitely worth your while to check out in person. I would highly recommend the #FFFTF Tonight sponsored by Leinenkugel. It's a good way to stop in and see Brian and try his wonderful food, along with all of Indy's other food trucks. If you go, tell him Justin from @Mealightenment sent you.
Eat On,
