Hoosier Fat Daddy? Tell Me Now!

On Saturday, I had the wonderful opportunity to attend the annual May Day Concert, presented by radio station WRZX 103.3 FM (X103).  To those of you who don't know, it is an outdoor event hosting five or six bands at the Klipsch Music Center.  It's pretty hard to find a better time, due to the fact that there's music, beer, and FOOD TRUCKS!

Jockamo Upper Crust

Don't Panic! There is parking in the rear. And a patio!
Have you ever been in the mood for pizza, but tired of the normal toppings? Or, have you been in the mood for a Philly Cheesesteak or Cajun food, but whoever you’re hanging out with has just wanted pizza? If that has ever happened to you, then consider Jockamo Upper Crust. Located on the East Side of Indianapolis in the Historic Irvington District, Jockamo has been serving up traditional and not-so-traditional pizzas since 2007.

The Diner

What kind of food is it that restaurants serve that makes you want to keep coming back?  For most, it's one of two things: either the restaurant serves comfort food, or a restaurant that serves up the food the way the owner and workers would want it if they cooked it for themselves?  What if I told you that a place like this exists in Indianapolis, fits into our price point of $15 or less, and has amazing quality food that has had me there 3 times in their first three weeks after opening.

Low Sodium Sweet and Sour Chicken

Who else has procrastinated on eating healthy for the year 2013?  Well, the cold weather is almost over and the time to get in shape is running out. So lets get started on what you'll need to make some healthy sweet and sour chicken that tastes like it was fresh from the local Chinese Restaurant.  It will keep you in line with your goal of losing weight, and it's a heart healthy alternative to ordering out. Here's what you'll need:

Justin's #IndyEats Bucket List

Well here we are, another point of change....

I feel as though this is the weirdest possible way for me to announce this, but as of June, I (Justin) will be moving to the Tampa area with my wife so that she can pursue a promotion with the company she works for.  I am sad to leave Indy, as I have lived here for the last 8 years, and I will forever think of this place as my home.  Nonetheless, the opportunity for her to pursue her career, and for me to attend school for cheap (FL in-state tuition is nearly $1,200 cheaper vs. IUPUI) is just too good to pass up.  Although I am sad to leave my snowy state of IN, I am happy for the doors that this will open up for Mealightenment to expand again.

The Tamale Place

I was hearing people talk about The Tamale Place in regular conversations for a few months now (C'mon, I write a food blog.. You know that people are going to tell me where I should eat). Everyone said that The Tamale Place is the only place you should go to eat tamale's in Indy. I decided to give it a shot a few days ago. Was I completely blown away with the flavors of Mexico... YES! So much so that I went Monday to try the place, and when I started writing this blog on Thursday, I had to go back and try some more of their delicious home made food! At the price, I can make this a staple in my food selection each week. A tamale combo is only 8 bucks! Which comes with a tamale, rice or beans, chips, fresh salsa, and a drink. The taco's are $2.50 each or 3 for $7.25, and are worth every penny!

Breakfast That Will Send You Straight to Bed (The Deli - Review)

Before I begin, I must state that once Justin and I took a simple glance at DELI'S menu, we stopped, looked at each other and said, "This is going to be a lot of food!"

Chris' Ice Cream...& Tacos?

Chris' Ice Cream - Nora (82nd /Monon Trail)

Recently, while trolling Twitter, I had a friend tell me about a place in Nora that I absolutely had to try.  According to my friend, this place has amazing and inexpensive tacos that give other area restaurants a run for their money.  Now what if I told you that the restaurant was "technically" a homemade ice cream shop?  Weird, right?  The exact same thing I thought...but then the very next thing I felt was intrigue.

Getting to Know @Mealightenment [Week 3] Spotlight

Oh, hello there.  Hopefully the #Snowpocalypse is treating all of you well so far, and hopefully you have plenty of food to get you through the end of the night (though most everything should be open by this evening).

Well, this is the third week of our Spotlight feature, and this week, we're featuring James (or Devin, as he prefers to be known).  Devin and I came to meet through school, as we both had the same professor for English Composition.  We had a project in this class that basically started the course of this entire blog...and well, now here we are.

Getting to Know @Mealightenment [Week 2] Spotlight

Jacob came into the blog in a rather unorthodox fashion.  Jacob and I (Justin) not only do the blog together, but we also work our regular jobs together.  I hadn't really know anything of Jacob before the blog, other than he was just a funny guy that worked at the same place as me.  When the blog started to gain traction in early summer of 2012, and I told Jacob about it.  It was the first time I'd seen his interest in food.  From there on out, until I decided he might be a good addition to our blog, he and I talked food literally everyday.

Front Page Sports Bar [Review]

Justin and Ben Risinger
It was a fairly gloomy Thursday when Devin and I went downtown for a visit to the Mass. Ave. staple establishment, the Front Page Sports Bar.  This bar and restaurant has been a part of Mass. Ave., well before it was the Mass. Ave. we all know and love today.  Located at the corner of Massachusetts Ave. and Delaware, for years it was known as Earl's Front Page because of it's location across the street from the Indy Star, and it is the oldest sports bar in the downtown area.

Red Lion Grog House

Season Greetings my fellow foodies! Thanksgiving is over, and Christmas is just around the corner! We have been roasting our brains thinking of some new and exciting recipes and other content that we will be featuring soon!

Everyone knows that I am the late night food guru for Mealightenment. I am combing the streets at some point between the hours of 11PM and 3AM looking for fantastic food at a good price.

Maxine's Chicken & Waffles

Comfort food for some is mashed potatoes or mac n' cheese; for me, it's chicken and waffles.  It all started for me several years ago while visiting friends in LA. We stood in line for The Price is Right, and afterward visited one of the best establishments in West LA, Roscoe's House of Chicken and Waffles.  Earlier this year, I got another taste of my favorite unconventional dish at Hash House A Go Go in Las Vegas, while there for my bachelor party.  My appetite for this meal is insatiable, & when I heard that Indianapolis had it's own chicken and waffles restaurant, of course my interest was immediately sparked.  I decided that I definitely need to check this place out.

How Indianapolis does pizza! (Napolis Pizza)

One quick question. What do you call the day of the week, where you truly do not want to cook? I'm not to sure what you call it, but I call that night...PIZZA NIGHT.

Italian Braised Beef Roast with a Chianti Gravy!

Whose tired of the same American style roast?!?! This guy right here! When I think of cooking... I try to come up with something that is a little twisted, a little off of the beaten path. That is when I thought of turning the roast that I grew up on, which was always made with brown gravy and baked next to baby carrots, and switch the flavor up a bit. At my families dinner table, I'm known for my mixed culture cooking. This time around, I came up with an Italian braised roast.

Ingredients
  • Beef shoulder roast

Homemade Sushi, 3-Ways

What the hell have I gotten myself into?

A few weeks ago, my wife and I were grocery shopping.  While walking down the International Foods isle, I found a package of seaweed wraps, and thought, "How cool would it be if we made our own sushi?"

La Chinita Poblana - Tiny B Rip Taqueria

La Chinita Poblano - "Asian Inspired Tacos"
Two simple thoughts run through my mind before leaving for a night in Broad Ripple. Number one, what we will be eating, and two, who's the designated driver? For now, let's just focus on number one.

The New Guy...(Trick)

                                                                                    Oh hey there,

My name is Jacob Trick, and I just joined Mealightenment! Day in and day out I think of food and eating. . . Its pretty much my favorite past time. With that being said I was more than happy and eager to join the team with Justin and James.  I hope to bring a lot of great ideas and opportunities to the table here at Mealightenment.

Spice box Indy review

"Approachable Indian food" is the theme for Spice box!
As you can tell, we @mealightenment love our food trucks in Indianapolis! I can't decide if it is the originality of the food, the awesome owners, the great taste, or the excitement that a good truck brings to a curb near you! The one thing I do know for a fact is you can certainly find a truck that has tasty food for a good price!
